Anyone else miss teen girl magazines?
Diem is bringing that nostalgia back.
Diem cofounder Emma Bates introduces our new baby.
But first, here’s what else people are talking about on Diem:
how does one find a sugar daddy/ person who just wants to help them out financially?
Girls tell me situations where your gut feeling was right in a very scary way
Mother's Day gift ideas for complicated Mother/Child relationships?
Remember the teen girl magazine? The joy of getting your new issue every month? There is a whole generation of girls who grew up on these magazines, and I often think about how glad I am to be among them.
I grew up in the UK, so my first magazine of choice was Mizz, closely followed by Teen Vogue as I got a little older. I saved every single copy for years. I was specifically obsessed with the “agony aunt” pages, where girls would write in with their problems and a big sister-type writer would reply to them. It made me feel a little less alone seeing other teen girls with similar problems. I’m also inexplicably nosy, and there’s nothing I love more than reading other people’s gossip.
The origins of the teen girl magazine actually stem back to the 1940s, which was around the time psychologists identified “teenagers” as a distinct demographic that could engage with pop culture without parental supervision. At the time, there were barely any products or content tailored towards them. While of course, early attempts that this were extremely gendered with products and content for teen girls centered around beauty and fashion, they also often included things like sex education and discussion of “taboo” topics, sometimes hidden in fun envelopes you you to discover.
I’ve always felt like these agony aunt columns were the ultimate inspiration for Diem. We turn to them when we think about how we can build a place for users to get genuine advice from others who may have been in that situation before, or otherwise have wisdom to impart. These types of questions span a lifetime as women’s health and issues have long been undervalued. So much, however, started with those awkward teen moments.
We thought, at a time of such uncertainty and negative news cycles, wouldn’t it be fun to build a few things that were designed purely to spark joy and bring back memories of our girlhood? A little love letter to Mizz and an ode to teen girl nostalgia.
So we did just that! The first app is called twin flame. It’s inspired by those “who’s your real crush?” quizzes that I, personally, re-took 100 times until I landed on the celebrity crush (Chad Michael Murray) I really wanted. We also added a healthy dose of astrology, and layered in some general cosmic vibes for good measure. twin flame allows you to upload a picture of you and your crush, partner, or bff, and will send back a personalized love story and compatibility rating.
We hope this brings a little joy to your week. And don’t worry—there’s still more to come.
