She’s the woman who gives you gifts when it’s not your birthday. She’s the woman who never brings the same partner to the family function. She’s the one person who, when everyone else is stressed, just swirls her glass of wine and lets it all pan out. She is…the wine auntie.

The trope of the “wine auntie” in my opinion, is one closely affiliated with that of the childless cat lady—it conjures up an image of a woman who chose to not have children and is embracing a type of adulthood that is not defined by offspring. Both of these tropes are also used as insults by misogynistic people who are deeply uncomfortable with the idea of women who don’t want (or can’t have) children, and so instead seek fulfillment in other areas of their life.
