But first, here’s what else people are talking about on Diem:
My boyfriend is very open and honest that I'm average looking.
What can I do in the moment I feel like I'm getting a panic attack?
Last week Meta announced it would be eliminating its fact-checking team, which has a lot of people seeking alternatives and questioning what social media will be like under Trump. As a social media founder, I have a lot of thoughts—but mainly concerns. When community moderation protections are removed, it always affects those who are most marginalized: women, LGBTQIA+, and POC.
We’ve seen a drastic uptick in misogynistic hate comments on our brand accounts since November. The emboldened misogyny that was voted into office in November is scary and it’s not going anywhere, especially now Meta’s joined the ranks of X as a forum for “free speech.” While we also support free speech, we recognize that without stringent community guidelines, moderation, and protections, people will incorrectly utilize the term to bully, harass, and exhibit behavior that would be illegal if it were to happen in the real world on the street.
Relatedly, we’ve seen a lot of searches and conversations in the Diem app around what Trump 2.0 will mean for women and LGBTQIA+ communities. As I cannot predict the future, I don’t have answers to that—but what I do know is what we’ve done at Diem over the last two months to ensure you have a resource that protects your fundamental right to privacy, provides less-biased access to valuable resources, and facilitates community care when you need it most. So I thought I’d use this final pre-inauguration newsletter to share our commitment to your privacy and safety, and what you can expect from the Diem app moving forward.
Firstly! Some of you might not know much about the Diem app and what it does, so consider this your TLDR: Diem is like is chatGPT and Reddit had a baby, but designed for the girls, gays, and theys—it’s a search engine that feels more like asking questions in a girls’ bathroom than spiraling while searching the internet alone. You can search the internet via Diem AI and then, if you want, post your question to a community of ~100k users for real-time advice and feedback. In other words, we want you to search socially. We’ve trained Diem AI on more inclusive datasets, and it also pulls from the wisdom of the wider community, bringing new perspectives and community validation to your search results.
Now that you’re all up to speed, here’s what we’ve spent the last two months doing, and what you’ll see roll out from January 20 onwards:
When searching for answers to sensitive questions like abortion using Diem AI, you’ll be directed to a map (via Center for Reproductive Rights) to see your local rights and access. You’ll also see providers and community resources. All your abortion searches are protected.
Updates to the search answer UI so it’s easier to read and navigate. Additional updates to internet sources include a curation of more resources from across the internet (eg. subreddits, TikTok)
We have worked to update our company data and privacy policies to reflect our commitment to your safety. If Diem is subpoenaed, we will not comply. We will never share your search or messaging history as it pertains topics like: abortion, birth control, domestic violence, divorce, gender affirming surgery, or gay marriage.
We have made enhancements to existing anonymity, providing more education about it for you.
We’ve implemented new security updates, which we will continue to build upon through 2025.
We’ve made updates to onboarding to further highlight the type of space Diem is, and our commitment to your privacy.
Updates to our moderation models—to keep you safe from bad actors!
Links to resources via your User Profile settings (eg. Domestic Violence resources)
Through 2025, we will continue with additional updates to Diem that further enhance the quality of search results, community features, data security, user privacy, and moderation. So while I can’t promise the next four years are going to be pretty, I hope what we’ve spent the last few years building can be a resource to you. Communities are really all we ever have, and those with strong “whisper networks” have always found a way to make it through—don’t forget that!
